Claire graduated from Dartington College of Arts in 1988 and then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music.  She became a full-time woodwind specialist with Devon Youth Music from 1992, teaching in may local primary and secondary schools.

Claire graduated from Dartington College of Arts in 1988 and then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music.  She became a full-time woodwind specialist with Devon Youth Music from 1992, teaching in may local primary and secondary schools.

She was appointed onto the DYM management team in 1997. In 2002 Claire conducted a woodwind group at Exeter Cathedral in front of Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations.   Claire went on to conduct many woodwind groups at local and county level until DYM dissolved on 2004.

Claire has continued to teach in many school and colleges ever since and she has played professionally in many orchestral groups at home and in Europe.

Rachel Miller

Rachel Miller is the Sing and Play teacher. She studied at Oxford University and then as a post graduate at Dartington College of Arts, Devon and at Bristol University where she trained as a Music Therapist. She studied flute with Ingrid Culliford, Trinity College of Music and has taught flute since 1986 in private practice and in institutions including Dartington College of Arts, SaMM Totnes, Ivybridge Community College and several other schools. She has worked professionally as a flautist in several different genres including classical, jazz, folk and experimental music. She is a composer and writes soundtracks for theatre.

She is also a professional storyteller and has toured extensively with PuppetCraft - one of UK’s leading Puppet Theatre companies. She has worked with children for many years leading workshops and teaching foundation music skills in a creative and fun way. She also brings her knowledge and experience of working with areas of Special Educational Needs.

Rachel teaches flute, saxophone, recorder, tin whistle, piano and music theory. She taught at SaMM for many years when it first started and is delighted to return now as the Sing and Play Tutor.

Clare Devenport

Clare Devenport graduated from the Birmingham School of Music in 1985 with diplomas in flute teaching and performing. She was appointed to the ILEA wood wind panel and spent the next few years teaching flute and recorder in Primary and Secondary Schools. Clare’s interest in music and psychology influenced her choice in training and qualifying firstly as a music therapist and then as a Child psychotherapist working in the NHS. Since moving to Devon Clare has renewed her teaching practice working privately and in South Brent primary school. Clare enjoys playing with the band Skylark who perform their own arrangements of songs from the folk tradition
