Sam is thoroughly committed to music education and has over seven years of experience of individual and group brass, music theory, aural and composition tuition, both privately and in primary and secondary schools.
He is in his eighth year as Brass Tutor at SaMMS, and is currently director of its Wind Band and Music Theory groups. In addition, he enjoys composing and arranging music, especially for jazz, brass and wind ensembles.
In 2006, he was commissioned to write a piece inspired by Mozart’s Requiem, which was performed to an audience of 700 in the Hall for Cornwall by an ensemble including members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the KEVICC Orchestra.
Sam performs regularly on trumpet and flugelhorn around the South West, and is very fortunate to have been a regular member and soloist with the Mike Westbrook Big Band since 2010, working with musicians such as Mike & Kate Westbrook, Dave Holdsworth, Mark Bassey, Lou Gare, Alan Wakeman, Roz Harding and Lewis Riley amongst many others. Recently he has been recording A Bigger Show with Mike Westbrook’s Uncommon Orchestra, a double album produced by Jon Hiseman to be released on ASC records due out at the end of 2015.
He also plays with Punctuality, a small jazz and funk ensemble consisting of a number of former SaMMS and KEVICC students, arranging and composing a number of tunes for the band. Punctuality are available for concerts, weddings and private functions – please visit the Punctuality Jazz home page for more information. Recently, Sam has also had the privilege of playing cornet with Roche Brass in a number of concerts and was fortunate enough to be involved in the winning performance under Garry Cutt at the 2015 West of England Regional Brass Band Championships (First Section). He is also playing regularly with acclaimed Devon ska band The Simmertones and will be performing with them at many dates in the coming months, including the International Ska Festival 2016 on 26th March.
