Musical Explorations through Play- First steps in improvisation.

As children and young people progress in learning musical instruments there are a number of different elements of music that they need to begin to use in their music. As well as how to read music and how to play particular notes on their instruments they will need to begin to get to know about scales, chords and different rhythms.

One way of learning about such features of music is to explore them through improvisation. Improvisation is an approach to music where music is created spontaneously. It is of particular relevance to jazz, but also very present in rock, folk and contemporary classical music. Through musical play with these elements, students are invited to discover how music theories can become something fascinating and personal.

It is a session for children between the ages of about eight to ten. It will be helpful if students know a handful of notes on their instruments and have a curiosity to experiment as they develop.
